چکیده

An extensive series of studies was performed at the Energy & Environmental Research Center with mercury (Hgo) sorbents in a thin bed using combinations of various flue gas constituents. This work determined that all the sorbents exhibited breakthrough in about I hour in the full flue gas mixture, and the mercury emitted after breakthrough is an oxidized mercury species. Trapping of the oxidized species and identification by mass spectrometry demonstrated that both carbon and metal oxide sorbents release the relatively volatile mercuric nitrate hydrate when both NO,, SO,, and water vapor are present in the gas phase. Further investigations of treated sorbents allow us to determine the role of oxidation and basic sites on the sorbent in the capture of mercury in NO, and SO, streams.

An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of surface changes on brominated and sulfur-treated activated carbon sorbents during mercury capture: performance of pellet versus fiber sorbents.

This work explores surface changes and the Hg capture performance of brominated activated carbon (AC) pellets, sulfur-treated AC pellets, and sulfur-treated AC fibers upon exposure to simulated Powder River Basin-fired flue gas. Hg breakthrough curves yielded specific Hg capture amounts by means of the breakthrough shapes and times for the three samples. The brominated AC pellets showed a sharp...

A New Approach for Retaining Mercury in Energy Generation Processes: Regenerable Carbonaceous Sorbents

The energy production processes from fossil fuels represent the first anthropogenic source of mercury emissions in Europe and the second in the world. Among the different possibilities that can be posed to reduce these emissions, this work focuses on the use of regenerable sorbents based on gold nanoparticles dispersed on activated carbon foam. The use of regenerable sorbents would not only all...

Predicting the impact of SO3 on mercury removal by carbon sorbents

This paper introduces a combined homogeneous and heterogeneous SO3 production mechanism to quantify the interference of SO3 on the capture of Hg by unburned carbon (UBC) and activated carbon sorbents in flue gas from coal-fired power plants. This mechanism was validated against measurements at different locations along the gas cleaning systems at fourteen power plants representing the entire ra...

Acidulation and Regeneration of Bamboo Derived Sorbents for Gas Phase Adsorption of Elemental Mercury

This paper presents results that illustrate the recycling of a bamboo derived sorbent used for the capture of elemental mercury (Hg). The bamboo derived sorbent used is essentially a HCl functionalized activated carbon prepared from carbonization and CO2 activation of raw bamboo, that could potentially provide an alternative way to existing methods in removing mercury from flue gases from coal-...

Optimization of a novel setup for an on-line study of elemental mercury adsorption by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry.

BACKGROUND The objective of this work was developing a simple and stable time-based on-line setup for assessing the potential of mercury (Hg) vapor adsorption of the commercial sorbents used in air sampling and control operation followed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). METHODS A special designed separation chamber was used where reduction of the injected Hg (II) solution...
